Q1. As of Tableau 2018.3, Tableau is only available on a Windows Operating System?

Correct! Wrong!

B is correct. Tableau Desktop has been available on the Mac since release 8.2 which was released on the 18th June 2018. You will require an iMac/MacBook computers 2009 or newer, OSX 10.11 or newer and 1.5 GB minimum free disk space.

Q2. Which of the following is NOT a Tableau Desktop application?

Correct! Wrong!

D is correct. Tableau Express does NOT exist. Tableau Desktop is the premium desktop visualisation tool. Tableau Public is a free application that is a version of Tableau Desktop with key features missing, for example, to connect to Enterprise databases or the ability to save Tableau workbooks locally. Tableau Reader is a free application that allows you to view and interact with workbooks that have been saved as .twbx (packaged workbook).

Q3. Which of the following files types contains a Tableau Workbook along with local data?

Correct! Wrong!

C is correct. A Packaged Workbook (.twbx) is a single zip file that contains the workbook along with any supporting local file data and background images. Extracts (.hyper or .tde) are a local copy of a subset or entire data set that you can use to share data with others, when you need to work offline, and to improve performance, extracts can be published to a Tableau Server and scheduled to refresh. Tableau Workbooks (.twb) hold the definition of one or more worksheets, plus zero or more dashboards and stories.

Q4. Which of the following is not a Tableau file type?

Correct! Wrong!

C is correct. .tdx is NOT a Tableau file type. Data source files (.tds) are shortcuts for quickly connecting to the original data that you use often. Data source files do not contain the actual data but rather the information necessary to connect to the actual data as well as any modifications you've made on top of the actual data such as changing default properties, creating calculated fields, adding groups, and so on. Bookmarks (.tbm) contain a single worksheet and are an easy way to quickly share your work. A packaged data source (.tdsx) is a zip file that contains the data source file (.tds) described above as well as any local file data such as extract files (.hyper or .tde), text files, Excel files, Access files, and local cube files.

Q5. A Tableau Workbook can contain multiple data sources from different source systems?

Correct! Wrong!

A is correct. A Tableau Workbook can have several different connections with different data sources. For example, in your workbook, you may have a Salesforce.com data source for your sales information, as well as a data source for your internal Finance system. Both data sources can be levaraged in a single Worksheet.

Q6. In Tableau, Data Blending is where you?

Correct! Wrong!

C is correct. Data blending in Tableau is a method for combining data that supplements a table of data from one data source with columns of data from another data source; this is performed per worksheet, although, Tableau does suggest possible link columns.

Q7. In the Data Pane, what sections do you have?

Correct! Wrong!

Q8. Which of the following is NOT a Tableau Field data type?

Correct! Wrong!

E is correct. Float is not a Tableau data type. Tableau has the Number (decimal) data type to handle floating number precision. Right-click on an item in your data sidebar and go to Change Data Type to see the possible options.

Q9. When creating Hierarchies in Tableau, you are limited to three levels of hierarchy

Correct! Wrong!

B is correct. Your hierarchy can be as deep as you require. Personally speaking, I try to keep hierarchies below five levels.

Q10. In the Data Pane, you can choose "Group by Folders" or "Group Data Source Table"

Correct! Wrong!

A is correct. If you right-click an empty space in the data pane, you can choose "Group by Folder" or "Group by Data Source Table".

Q11. In the Data Pane, Discrete values are which color?

Correct! Wrong!

C is correct. Discrete values are treated as finite. Generally, discrete fields add headers to the view. Continuous field values are treated as an infinite range. Generally, continuous fields add axes to the view. Continuous values are Green. Red items in the data sidebar indicates an Calculated Field error.

Q12. Which of the following Data Pane items cannot be dragged onto the Filters Shelf

Correct! Wrong!

D is correct. You cannot drag Parameters onto the Filters Shelf. You will normally use parameters within Calculated Fields to return a boolean value; the Calculated Field would then be dragged onto the Filters Shelf.

Q13. Which of the descriptions below describes a Tableau Story

Correct! Wrong!

B is correct. Answer A describes a Tableau Dashboard. Answer C describes a Tableau Workbook.

Q14. You can add additional Color palettes to Tableau

Correct! Wrong!

A is correct. You can add additional Color schema to Tableau by editing your Preferences.tps file.

Q15. When using data source Fields in Calculated Fields, the Square brackets are optional

Correct! Wrong!

A is correct. I always use Square brackets to indicate that we are looking at a Field from the Data Source, however, this is actually optional providing there are no spaces in the Field name. This is a pet hate and something that I wish Tableau would change for consistency purposes.

Q16. If you want to replace one Field with another without breaking your worksheet

Correct! Wrong!

C is correct. If you right-click on an object and choose Replace References, you can replace all objects using your selected object with a new one, including Calculated Fields. This is a serious time saver and especially cool when you are experimenting with a new calculation before you want to apply it Workbook wide.

Q17. What is the maximum number of Columns in a Table

Correct! Wrong!

D is correct. The default number of columns is 6, but this can be increased to 16 by going to Analysis, Table Layout and the Advanced setting. There is an undocumented trick to increase this by hacking the XML, but this is seriously not recommended. Tableau Magic has also developed a DataTables extension that gives you a lot of neat functionality.

Q18. Which of the following is NOT a Mark Type

Correct! Wrong!

D is correct. Although Doughnut charts are not too hard to build, it is not an out of the box selectable feature of Tableau. The other on this list are.

Q19. In a Calculated Field, the following will be interpreted as a comment

Correct! Wrong!

A is correct. I am not sure that any programming language I have used in recent memory uses # for comments, maybe MIPS. Answer C is quite common in programming languages like Java or PHP. Answer D is used for VBA. E is for literals.

Q20. We can extend the functionality of Tableau through Third-Party companies

Correct! Wrong!

A is correct. As of Tableau 2018.2, third-party companies and developers can create Extensions to add functionality to Tableau. This in iteself is a very exciting place at the moment and definitely something you want to keep your eye on.

  1. Q15. When using data source Fields in Calculated Fields, the Square brackets are optional

Why is optional? Could you please be more clear about that?

    • Imagine you have a field in a Tableau Data Source called Sales. In your calculations you can either use Sales or [Sales]. If your field name is a single world, you do not need to use the brackets.
